There is a minimal likelihood that active pathogens are present in a specimen, that specimen can be shipped as an Exempt Animal Specimen and the regulations applicable to infectious substance shipments are not applicable. Examples of routine tests that are considered exempt are: blood tests for hormone levels; most urine tests; tests to monitor organ functions; therapeutic drug monitoring tests; pregnancy tests; and biopsies for cancer.
